Summary

Power Athlete, released on the Super Nintendo as Power Moves, stands out in the early‑90s fighting crowd thanks to its RPG‑style progression. In single‑player you only control Joe, an American kenpo fighter, but you can spend points to raise his strength, speed and endurance between bouts, giving the game a surprisingly deep grind for a head‑to‑head brawler. The battles unfold on a two‑plane arena, a nod to SNK’s Fatal Fury, letting fighters dodge forward or back to avoid attacks. The roster is eclectic: Hawaiian brawler Warren, Thai‑born Chinese martial artist Reayon (the sole female), hulking Russian wrestler Vagnad, knife‑wielding Spanish matador Nick, multi‑disciplinary Japanese kabuki master Buoh, Chinese Gaoluon, Kenyan tribal champion Baraki, and the hidden champion Ranker, unlockable via passwords. Though the Genesis cover splashed blood, the SNES box swapped it for sweat to meet Nintendo’s no‑violence policy, and the game itself contains no gore. Even the U.S. magazine ad featured crude screenshots that barely resembled the actual gameplay.

Storyline

In Power Athlete’s single‑player mode, you guide Joe on his quest to become the champion of champions. The path pits him against a roster of regional winners before he finally faces Ranker, the American Champion of Champions, who serves as the game’s ultimate boss.
