Summary

Pocky & Rocky 2 (known in Japan as Kiki Kaikai: Tsukiyo Soushi) expands the classic top‑down shoot‑em‑up formula with free eight‑directional movement. Player 1 controls Pocky, who hurls ofuda talismans and can temporarily seize control of the partner’s body to unleash special abilities, or even fling the partner at enemies for massive damage. The second slot is filled by one of seven distinct allies, each offering a unique attack pattern and unlimited lives; when playing solo the ally is AI‑controlled.

The game’s visual polish and soundtrack stand out, with detailed sprites—down to tiny animals and items—adding charm to the frantic action. New partner mechanics introduce strategic layers absent from the original, rewarding players who experiment with each character’s quirks.

Critics responded favorably, awarding scores in the 80‑90 % range from publications such as Computer and Video Games, Famitsu and Official Nintendo Magazine. Though Japanese sales topped just over 4 000 units, the title earned a runner‑up spot for Best Adventure Game and landed at #73 on IGN’s Top 100 SNES Games list.
