Summary

Phalanx: The Enforce Fighter A-144 grabs your attention before you even turn the cartridge on, thanks to its infamous US box art—a bearded old man in overalls strumming a banjo while a sleek star‑fighter zooms behind him. The designers admitted the surreal image was a deliberate ploy to stand out in a sea of generic space‑shooter covers, and it still gets cited as one of the most bizarre game packages ever made. Once you fire up the SNES, the game rewards quick reflexes with three selectable ship speeds, letting you dart past swarms or crawl through tight bullet patterns, while a three‑hit health bar lets you survive a few mistakes before a power‑capsule restores a point. You can carry three weapons at once—Laser, Homing, Energizer, or Ricochet—each with its own smart‑bomb twist, and swapping a weapon for a bomb frees up a slot without waste. The eight stages take you from the industrial corridors of Delia IV to the alien interior itself, with a 300,000‑point extension and three difficulty settings, plus a hidden “Funny” mode that cranks the enemy fire to the max. Critics praised the crisp graphics but noted the gameplay could feel frustrating, and a 1993 Super Famicom poll gave it a modest 21.45 out of 30.

Storyline

Set in the year 2279, a human research colony on the alien world Delia IV sends an emergency transmission warning of a hazardous leak. The message reveals that the planet’s space fighters have been seized by a mysterious squadron of alien bioships, turning them into hostile threats. Player‑character Wink Baufield, a genetically enhanced ace pilot, is dispatched on Operation Climax aboard the prototype starfighter A/144 Phalanx. Her mission is to investigate the disaster, uncover the source of the invasion, and reclaim the colonized world. In this futuristic shooter, the fate of Delia—and the shattered military defenses of the Andromeda‑based outpost—rests entirely on the Phalanx’s shoulders.
