Summary
Out of This World on the SNES feels like a whole new adventure, even though it’s the same core experience that made the original a landmark. Interplay’s port added a fair number of extra enemies, turning the already tense platforming into something noticeably tougher. A brief diary entry opens the game, pulling you straight into Lester’s panic before the title screen even appears.
The U.S. version also hides a bit of gore by recoloring the blood a lurid green, a common trick back then to keep the rating board happy. The Apple IIgs port mirrors the SNES play‑through almost exactly, just without that green tint. Both versions retain the minimalist UI—no health bars, just an occasional oxygen meter during the swim sequences—and rely entirely on visual storytelling.
Despite the increased challenge, the game’s dynamic soundtrack weaves through the atmospheric graphics, earning the SNES release an 84 % aggregate score on GameRankings. Critics still praised its cinematic presentation and the way it stripped away menus to immerse players in an alien world. Decades later, developers still cite Out of This World as a key influence on titles like Ico, Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill.
Storyline
The SNES classic Out of This World (also known as Another World) opens with young physicist Lester Knight Chaykin pulling up to his underground lab in a black Ferrari during a thunderstorm. He fires up a particle accelerator to recreate the birth of the universe, but a lightning strike fries the machine, causing a massive explosion that tears a hole in space‑time and throws Lester onto a barren alien world.
After dodging hostile native fauna, Lester is captured by a race of humanoid aliens and dumped in a subterranean prison camp. He teams up with an alien captive called “Buddy,” and together they break out, navigating a maze of cells, caves and a towering structure while solving environmental puzzles and fending off soldiers and wild creatures.
In the final showdown Lester is gravely wounded, but with Buddy’s help he defeats his attacker and reaches the tower’s summit. There, a dragon‑like creature appears; Buddy lifts the injured Lester onto its back and the pair soar away toward the horizon.
