Summary

Lester the Unlikely (known in Japan as Odekake Lester – Lelele no Le) feels like a quirky love‑letter to early 90s platformers, but with a twist: the hero’s own nerves become a gameplay mechanic. Early on, any creature—whether a harmless turtle or a looming gorilla—makes Lester scream and bolt in the opposite direction, temporarily stealing control from the player. A second approach sees him inch forward, arms out, gradually shedding his cowardice as each foe is conquered. The game’s 8 MB cartridge packs stunning rotoscoped animation, a visual style praised alongside *Prince of Persia*, thanks to lead artist Bill Stanton’s backgrounds and Eric Browning’s motion‑capture work (Browning also provides Lester’s voice). Michel Bohbot’s cover art and Brian Greenstone’s programming round out the team. Critics were split—Famitsu’s scores hovered around the mid‑range, while Game Informer and Nintendo Game Zone were harsher—yet many praised the bizarre, fun spin on the genre despite its limited continues.

Storyline

The SNES title Odekake Lester – Lelele no Le (often just called Odekake Lester) opens with a geeky teenage boy named Lester reading the latest *Super Duper Hero Squad* comic at a dock. He falls asleep on a cargo crate, is accidentally loaded onto a ship that is hijacked by pirates and sinks, and he barely escapes by grabbing a life jacket and swimming to a nearby tropical island. Once ashore, Lester fends off tiny foes—turtles, crabs, seagulls and bats—until a Guardian Tiki directs him to seek Hector, the island’s leader, who lives beyond a haunted burial ground. He eventually reaches the village, meets Tikka, Hector’s daughter, and learns that pirates have kidnapped her father, prompting a reluctant Lester to volunteer for the rescue.

Despite Tikka’s doubts about his weak physique, Lester proves his mettle by defeating a giant ape in the jungle, an act that earns him a kiss from Tikka and a sudden boost in confidence and agility. With her help he infiltrates the pirate ship, wins a sword‑fight, and frees Hector, who rewards him with a seaworthy surfboard. The hero then rides the massive waves generated by an atomic test at Bikini Atoll to surf back home, where he recounts his adventure to two beautiful women on a beach. After the credits the game teases a sequel with the line, “watch for Lester, he will be back!”
