Summary

Obitus blends first‑person dungeon crawling with a surprisingly fluid 8‑direction view, scrolling smoothly as you turn. That movement feels more three‑dimensional than the four‑direction grids of titles like Dungeon Master or Eye of the Beholder.

When you reach a castle, the camera snaps to 2D side‑scrolling, adding a jumping ability and a four‑way navigation scheme. In the overworld you fight enemies with a bow in horizontally scrolling sections, dodging projectiles while hunting for hidden treasures. Exploration is rewarded with items, weapons, and the mystical gems needed to progress.

The game forces constant mapping—rooms look alike and food is scarce, so a lost traveler will quickly run out of stamina. Stamina depletes over time and can only be restored by sleeping beside a friendly NPC; once exhausted, health starts to drain. Bullet‑Proof Software's SNES release earned a four‑star rating from GamePro, which praised the music, controls and seamless blend of RPG ambience with real‑time combat. Electronic Gaming Monthly countered that it mainly appeals to RPG fans rather than those who dislike role‑playing tropes.

Storyline

Obitus drops you into the depths of your own worst nightmare. You play as Wil Mason, a medieval history lecturer whose car stalls in a storm‑riddled stretch of Snowdonia, Wales. Seeking shelter in an abandoned tower, he awakens in a bizarre, alien world that feels both familiar and hostile.

The kingdom of Obitus was once ruled by King Cullen, who handed power to his four sons and gave each a Gem of Tranquility to bind the realm together. An evil sorceress whispered promises of wealth, sowing mistrust; the princes turned on one another, each claiming a gem and a quarter of the land, shattering the protective force. Only by reuniting the gems in the Tower of Obitus can the kingdom be saved.

Gameplay blends RPG elements with hack‑and‑slash action. You explore forests, mines and underground complexes, collect objects, and interact with indigenous creatures. Parallax‑styled daylight sequences let you race forward, dispatching enemies as you hunt for the missing gems.
