Summary

The Ninja Warriors lands on the SNES as a side‑scrolling beat ’em up that builds on Taito’s 1987 arcade classic while showcasing the polish of Natsume’s later work on Wild Guns. You pick one of three ninja androids—each a distinct playstyle: a hulking nunchaku‑wielding Ninja, a lightning‑fast sickle‑armed Kamaitachi, or the balanced knife‑and‑sword Kunoichi. Their move sets include dashes, jumps, grabs and a charge‑up meter that unleashes a screen‑clearing attack, but the meter empties if you’re knocked down.

Across eight linear stages you’ll toss motorcycles, smash safes, dodge mines and even survive helicopter fire, with unlimited continues that let you swap characters after a loss. The game omits a two‑player co‑op, which shortens its replay value despite the vibrant colors, large sprites and tight controls that reviewers praised. Regional releases differ slightly—Western versions swapped a few female enemies for male sprites—and all versions have become prized collector’s items.

Storyline

In a bleak, dystopian future the world is ruled by Banglar the Tyrant, a dwarfish mutant‑cyborg who commands brain‑washed soldiers, vicious mutants and relentless combat robots. His iron grip goes unchallenged until a rebel army led by a human named Mulk rises against him. Desperate and unable to defeat Banglar with conventional weapons, Mulk’s forces deploy three self‑aware combat androids styled after Japanese ninjas – the stainless‑steel heroes of Ninjawarriors (often called Ninja Warriors). Programmed with ancient ninja skills and armed with fists, swords, knives and curving steel blades, the trio has one mission: infiltrate Banglar’s fortress and eliminate the tyrant. The androids battle through waves of mutant troops and robots, finally confronting Banglar and killing him. Built‑in explosives then detonate, ensuring his death and destroying the androids to prevent any future threat. Months later Mulk becomes President of the World Government, continues developing autonomous combat androids, and ultimately mirrors the very tyranny he once fought.
