Summary
Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodō, known abroad as The Journey Home: Quest for the Throne, is a Super Famicom action‑RPG that mixes fast real‑time combat with classic jump‑and‑push puzzles. The player can outfit Duke with armor, slam enemies into walls and even shift objects to reveal hidden paths, giving the title a surprising tactile feel.
The game marked an early entry for Wolf Team programmer Yoshiharu Gotanda, who later co‑created Tales of Phantasia and helped launch the Star Ocean series. Its soundtrack bears the imprint of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Yukihiro Takahashi, with sound programmer Hiroya Hatsushiba and veteran composers Motoi Sakuraba, Shinji Tamura and Ryota Furuya shaping the effects; the box art was supplied by famed manga illustrator Kia Asamiya.
Originally slated for an October‑November 1993 North‑American launch via Renovation Products, the release was scrapped when Sega bought the subsidiary. A near‑complete English prototype—featuring a new title screen and a rename of the homeland to “Nogal”— surfaced in a 2021 Video Game History Foundation archive, fueling collector interest despite mixed contemporary scores.
The game resurfaced on the Project EGG service in 2012 and celebrated its 30th anniversary with a Cassetron soundtrack release in 2023, keeping its atmospheric music alive for a new generation of retro fans.
Storyline
Neugier: Umi to Kaze no Kodou follows Duke, the son of Count Wein of Neugier, who was exiled by his father years earlier. While wandering distant lands he learns that his homeland is under siege and decides to return. His ship is ambushed by pirates commanded by a mysterious demon called Ord, forcing him to flee into the sea. Barely escaping, Duke reaches his father's castle, only to find the same pirates' assault linked to the monsters now roaming the halls.
Although Count Wein remains distrustful of his son, Duke is resolved to protect Neugier, known as Nogal in the English version. The game’s combat unfolds in real‑time battles as Duke battles through the cursed castle and its surrounding lands. Each encounter reveals more of the connection between the pirate raid and the supernatural threat. Ultimately, Duke’s quest is a race against time to save his kingdom from the demon Ord’s designs.
