Summary

Nankoku Shōnen Papuwa‑kun burst onto the Super Famicom on March 25, 1994, courtesy of Enix, bringing the off‑beat humor of its manga source to a cartridge format. While the game shares its name with the TV series, it introduces a handful of characters you won’t find anywhere else: the mysterious Umbrella Boot, the stoic Daruma, the oddly animated Gunma Doll, the fierce Ashura, the oddly named Pork Chop, and the enigmatic Tamasaburo. These exclusive faces add quirky side‑quests and hidden dialogues that reward players who explore beyond the main stages. Their inclusion gives the title a distinct flavor, turning a straightforward platformer into a quirky treasure hunt for fans of the series and retro collectors alike.

Storyline

Nangoku Shounen Papuwa‑kun, commonly referred to as Papuwa‑kun, begins with an ancient battle on an unknown southern island over two mysterious stones—a red one and a blue one. The blue stone governs desire and gave rise to the blue clan, while the red stone filled its clan with the light of hope. When the conflict ended, the youth who wielded the blue stone fell into a deep sleep, and the bearer of the red stone vanished far into the sky. The legend says desire and hope will linger until the two powers reunite again.

The playable story follows Shintaro, a defector from the Ganma Army, who becomes stranded on an uncharted island. There he meets the title character Papuwa and a host of eccentric creatures, all tied to the lingering energies of the red and blue stones. As Shintaro explores, the island’s strange inhabitants reveal fragments of the ancient clash, pulling the player deeper into the mythic conflict.
