Summary
Mr. Tuff is a surprisingly polished 2‑D platformer from the team behind Super SWIV. Although Ocean shelved the 1994‑95 cartridge, the nearly finished engine and graphics survived long enough for The Retro Room to finally release it in 2023.
You control a demolition robot trying to free peaceful domestic bots after the army machines took over a world abandoned for Utopia. Six areas contain interchangeable buildings; each level requires destroying a set number of targets before time runs out, then beating a boss, while hidden bonus rooms hide coins that unlock a secret island when thirty are collected.
The robot can be fitted with fist upgrades, helmets or backpacks that fire drills, lasers, missiles, yo‑yos and more, and can hop into wrecking trucks, hoverboards, submarines or tanks, each with its own energy bar. Stars collected act as currency for a shop selling extra lives, checkpoints, a lucky dip and passwords.
A two‑player mode lets a second player become Mr. Firm, alternating turns, and the soundtrack by Allister Brimble and Steve Blenkinsopp adds a retro‑futuristic flair.
Storyline
In the SNES game Mr. Tuff, humanity has fled a polluted Earth and colonized a distant world called Utopia. The exodus left behind countless household robots, which soon fell under the iron grip of six military androids who claimed the planet’s islands as their own. These androids enslave the domestic bots, forcing them into endless servitude.
A lone demolition robot named Mr. Tuff decides to rise up against the totalitarian regime. Determined to free his fellow machines, he battles the android overlords and their island strongholds. The story follows his rebellion as he attempts to restore autonomy to the oppressed robot population.
