Summary

EarthBound (Mother 2: Gīgu no Gyakushū) feels like a love‑letter to the oddball side of American culture, swapping swords and castles for diners, taxis and even piles of vomit. The game tosses the usual random‑encounter formula out the window – enemies wander the screen, and sneaking up on them from behind grants a first‑strike advantage, while weaker foes simply dissolve. When a character takes damage the HP counter rolls down like an old odometer, giving you a frantic window to heal before the numbers hit zero, and you even save your progress by calling Ness’s dad, who deposits money into an ATM‑style account.

The five‑year development saga was a rollercoaster, with writer Shigesato Itoi steering the goofy tone and Satoru Iwata stepping in as lead programmer to keep the project alive amid repeated cancellation threats. Composers Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka layered the soundtrack with jazz, salsa, reggae and dub, reinforcing the game’s off‑kilter vibe. Nintendo’s U.S. launch leaned into the absurd, splashing a $2 million “this game stinks” campaign that rewrote jokes, religion and alcohol references under localizer Marcus Lindblom’s watch.

Although EarthBound initially flopped in the States, a passionate fanbase rallied around its quirky humor and unconventional design. Over the years the title resurfaced on Virtual Console, the SNES Classic and Nintendo Switch Online, eventually earning a spot on many “greatest games” lists and cementing its reputation as a cult classic beloved by gaming’s cognoscenti.

Storyline

In the early 1990s a meteorite crashes in Eagleland, prompting Ness and his brother Pokey to investigate. They encounter Buzz‑Buzz, a tiny creature from the future who warns them that in ten years an alien force called Giygas will spread hatred, turning people, animals and objects into hostile beings. Buzz‑Buzz tasks Ness with gathering eight melodies using a Sound Stone hidden in sanctuaries worldwide, but the creature is killed and Ness must continue alone. Along the way he rescues the psychic girl Paula from cultists, befriends child scientist Jeff who arrives in a flying saucer, and later meets Prince Poo of Dalaam after a vision at the seaside resort Summers. With his three companions Ness fills the Sound Stone, confronts his own darkness in Magicant, and then uses a Phase Distorter to travel back in time, transferring their souls into robots to avoid bodily damage. In the final battle Giygas is revealed as an embodiment of pure evil; Paula’s prayers summon the power of human emotion and love, allowing the team to defeat the cosmic destroyer. After the victory Ness returns home, only to receive a taunting letter from Pokey.
