Storyline

Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow follows the medium‑boiled detective Maui Mallard as he arrives on a tropical island where the sacred Shabuhm Shabuhm idol has vanished. The island’s native guardian spirit is missing, and without it the whole island is doomed to explode, so Maui is thrust into the case.

His investigation takes him through a creepy mansion and into ancient ninja training grounds, where he earns the power to transform into the ninja alter‑ego Cold Shadow. After being thrown into a volcano as a sacrifice, he survives, passes the native "test of duckhood," and earns the islanders’ trust.

The natives reveal that only a dead elder knows the idol’s location, prompting Maui to recover the elder’s remains from the sea and journey through the land of the dead. He finally confronts the witch doctor in the Mojo Stronghold, defeats him, and the grateful islanders rename their home after their hero—despite their doubts that the name "Mallard" will attract tourists.
