Summary
The Mask on SNES captures the comic‑book’s zany, cartoony vibe more than the film’s live‑action look, letting the player swing a mallet, fire pocket‑sized guns, blast a living horn, or spin up a tornado just like the movie’s most memorable gags. Each ability drains a morph meter that refills with power‑ups, and when it’s empty the Mask reverts to his sleepy, pajama‑clad Stanley Ipkiss form.
Levels wander from Ipkiss’s cluttered apartment through a high‑rent district, a bank, a park, a striped‑uniform prison, and finally a glitzy nightclub where the showdown with Dorian unfolds. Bosses echo the film’s characters—Mrs. Peenman the angry landlady, the hapless repairmen Irv and Burt—while secret passages let you slip behind scenery for a cheeky shortcut.
Critics praised the faithful humor, lively animations and the sheer variety of cartoon‑style attacks, but they noted the maze‑like level design could feel confusing and the graphics sometimes looked a couple of years old. A beta build leaned toward beat‑‘em‑up action, and a carnival‑themed stage was cut before release; a Genesis version was scrapped entirely because the SNES launch lagged too far behind the movie’s hype.
Storyline
The Mask on the SNES follows Stanley Ipkiss, a mild‑mannered bank clerk who is constantly unlucky and bullied. One night he discovers a mysterious green Loki mask that grants him wild, cartoonish powers. When he puts on the mask he becomes the manic alter‑ego known as The Mask. Meanwhile, mob boss Dorian Tyrell and his gang of rogues plot to seize control of Edge City, using the nightclub Dorian runs as a front for their schemes. The Mask and Stanley must thwart Dorian’s takeover and rescue Tina Carlyle, the woman both men love.
