Summary
Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest feels like a love‑letter to the old SNES hacks I used to tinker with. It’s essentially a reboot of the fan‑made Super Mario Bros. 5 Reborn, expanding the original’s 74 levels while keeping many of the familiar tilesets, music cues, and world themes. What sets it apart is a completely redesigned level layout and a much smoother overworld that finally sheds the blocky look of its predecessor. The hack even pushes the hardware a bit further, boasting real HDMA gradient effects and custom Layer 3 graphics that give each area a fresh visual punch. In terms of challenge, it sits comfortably in the middle of the Mario spectrum—easy at the start, then gradually stepping up the difficulty as you progress.
