Summary
Majūō, sometimes seen as Majyuuou, is a hidden gem of the Super Famicom era that still feels fresh for anyone who loves a good side‑scrolling challenge. You control Abel, a determined dad on a quest to pull his daughter out of the underworld, and the game rewards you with vivid, color‑coded gems that let you morph into a red Harpy, a blue Dragon, or a green Lizard—each form bringing its own attack pattern. The transformation mechanic feels like a mash‑up of Castlevania’s gothic atmosphere and Contra’s gun‑play, which is why Retro Gamer called it "Castlevania with a Gun" and wondered why it never left Japan.
Even after more than two decades, the cartridge commands premium prices on the secondary market, with boxed copies fetching six‑figure yen sums, and a 2018 soft‑garage re‑release sold for just under 6,000 yen. Critics have praised its moody visuals and brutal difficulty, earning an 8/10 from Nintendo Life and a mixed but respectable Famitsu spread. A 2024 announcement from Retro‑Bit hints at a new release, promising that this demon‑filled platformer might finally reach a wider audience.
Storyline
In Majuu Ou, you play as Abel, a man driven by a single purpose: to rescue his wife and child from the depths of hell. His quest begins when his former friend Bayer kidnaps Abel’s daughter, selling his own soul to the devil and sacrificing Abel’s wife in a dark ritual aimed at resurrecting the King of Demons. Determined to save his daughter, Abel vows to pursue Bayer across the infernal realms, even if it means sacrificing his own humanity. The game follows his relentless journey through nightmarish landscapes, confronting demonic forces and the betrayal of a once‑trusted ally. Ultimately, Abel’s struggle is a desperate fight to reclaim his family and his soul.
