Summary
Madou Monogatari – Hanamaru Daiyouchienji, often shortened to Madō Monogatari Hanamaru, is a quirky entry in the Madō Monogatari series that first landed on the Super Famicom in Japan on January 12, 1996. Its Japanese title, はなまる大幼稚園児 (literally “Kids of Hanamaru Big Kindergarten”), hints at the whimsical school‑yard vibe that sets it apart from the more serious RPGs of its era. Though the game never received an official English patch, it resurfaced for modern audiences when Project EGG added it to their catalog in March 2024, preserving the original Japanese text and sprites for retro‑gaming archivists. The re‑release is notable because it offers a legal way to experience a title that had been locked away on aging hardware for nearly three decades, even if you’ll need a bit of translation help to navigate its menus.
Storyline
Madou Monogatari - Hanamaru Daiyouchienji follows five‑year‑old Arle Nadja, a kindergarten student who is about to take her final exam. She must first locate a Final Exam Certificate before she can sit the test.
A mysterious letter tells her of eight magical gems that, when gathered and delivered to the Wizard’s Mountain, will grant a single wish. Arle decides to collect the gems in hopes of wishing for her exam certificate, battling a gang of local bullies and a cast of familiar Puyo Puyo characters along the way.
