Summary

The Lion King on SNES drops you into Simba’s world as a cub who learns to pounce, roar, and eventually master a full‑body combat system as an adult. Your roar is tied to a meter that refills, letting you stun foes or solve simple puzzles, while the later stages let you scratch, maul, and throw enemies with a satisfying sense of weight.

Hidden bugs pepper each level: some heal, the rarer ones boost both health and roar for the rest of the run, and the black spiders do the opposite. Collect enough of the right bugs and you unlock bonus stages starring Timon and Pumbaa – Timon races against the clock to gobble insects, while Pumbaa catches falling critters until a bad bug ends the round, rewarding extra lives and continues.

The visuals are a direct gift from Disney’s own animators, giving the sprites and backgrounds a polished, film‑like feel, and the soundtrack pulls straight from the movie’s orchestration. Interestingly, two levels – Hakuna Matata and Be Prepared – were lifted from scenes that never made the final cut, and the notorious “Can’t Wait to be King” monkey puzzle was deliberately made tougher to meet Disney’s rental‑playtime requirements.

Development was a tight sprint: Westwood Studios began in January 1994 and wrapped by July, with a $20 million total budget (including an $8 million marketing push). While Westwood handled the SNES and Genesis versions, other studios tackled ports to DOS, Game Gear, Master System, and NES, each adding their own quirks.

The SNES version sold 1.27 million copies in the U.S. and earned a mix of praise and critique – graphics and voice work were lauded, yet some reviewers called the gameplay repetitive and the controls imprecise. Still, scores from outlets like Electronic Gaming Monthly (31/40) and Next Generation (four out of five stars) show it resonated enough to become a nostalgic staple, later resurfacing in the Disney Classic Games collections for modern consoles.

Storyline

The Lion King on SNES follows Simba’s journey from a young cub to his adult showdown with Scar.

The game mirrors the film’s events, shifting between child and adult forms as you progress.

Your goal is to defeat the evil Uncle Scar, recapture the Pride Lands, and reclaim your rightful place in the Circle of Life.
