Summary
Paladin's Quest, known in Japan as Lennus: Kodai Kikai no Kioku, flips the usual RPG magic mechanic on its head: spells drain your own hit points instead of a separate MP pool. The system revolves around eight elemental "spirits"—Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Sphere, Sky, Heart, and Light—each granting a base spell, with every pair unlocking a combo spell, culminating in a total of 37 abilities. Battles shift to a first‑person view reminiscent of early Dragon Warrior titles, and speed determines turn order without affecting turn frequency.
Healing is deliberately scarce; the primary cure comes from refillable bottles that last nine uses, while a few pieces of equipment act as unlimited, self‑only healers. Mercenaries fill the party’s extra slots, bringing their own spirits and sometimes lacking any healing items, forcing you to weigh hiring new hires against leveling the veterans.
Kōhei Tanaka’s soundtrack adds a surprisingly cinematic layer, and despite its ambitious design the game earned mixed reviews—critics pointed out clunky controls, steep difficulty from the HP‑cost magic, and a visual style that felt dated even for a 16‑bit cartridge.
Storyline
Lennus – Kodai Kikai no Kioku (often just called Lennus) follows a teenage boy named Chezni who, on a reckless dare, awakens an ancient device known as Dal Gren. The activation unleashes a being of immense power and evil, shattering the magic school where Chezni studies. The headmaster, fearing global catastrophe, orders Chezni to destroy Dal Gren no matter the cost.
Armed with that grim mission, Chezni journeys across a war‑torn world, soon joined by a spirited girl named Midia who mirrors his resolve, and a band of mercenaries who lend their aid. Their primary foe is the young dictator Zaygos, who seeks to harness Dal Gren for his own nefarious ambitions. The story pits Chezni’s desperate quest against Zaygos’s ruthless plans, driving the game’s epic RPG adventure.
