Summary

Lennus II: Fuuin no Shito feels like a hidden gem from the Super Famicom era, especially once you stumble upon the 2008 fan‑made English patch. The game’s spirit system is a quirky twist on classic JRPG magic: you collect eight elemental spirits, equip a limited number of slots, and level them up by actually defeating monsters rather than grinding the same spell. It’s a neat blend of strategy and exploration, even if the battle pacing can feel a bit repetitive after a while.

Behind the scenes, director Hidenori Shibao poured four years into the title—double the schedule he’d planned—while his salary plummeted from 20 million yen to just 2 million yen. He famously called the project “cursed,” and the final product never saw a Western release, leaving it to a niche community to keep it alive. Kohei Tanaka’s soundtrack even earned a spot on a Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra compilation, a rare honor for a Super Famicom game.

Critics were split: some praised the world‑building and unique visual style, while others dismissed the graphics as dated and the combat as tedious. Still, the game’s ambition and the bittersweet story of its development make it a fascinating footnote for anyone digging into Japan‑only RPGs.

Storyline

Lennus II - Fuuin no Shito takes place on the moon Eltz, which orbits the planet Raiga. The original game was set on Lennus, another moon of the same planet, establishing a celestial connection between the two titles.

The story follows the hero, Falus (also referred to as Farus in some sources), who awakens after a ten‑thousand‑year slumber to find himself in an unfamiliar floating land. Disoriented, he encounters a group of cultists who mistakenly treat him as a deity.

The cultists reveal a prophecy that Falus is destined to bring about the "great union" of several separate floating continents. This foretold role pushes him toward a larger purpose beyond his own survival.

Accepting the call, Falus recruits a handful of mercenaries and sets out to fulfill the mission, traveling across the sky‑borne islands in pursuit of the promised union.
