Summary
Legend is a side‑scrolling beat‑em‑up that drops you into a sword‑clashing medieval world, echoing the vibes of Final Fight and Streets of Rage. It was born at Arcade Zone, the tiny French studio run solely by programmers Carlo Perconti and Lyes Belaidouni, who later started Toka and HyperDevbox Japan. Development was a whirlwind: two to three months of nonstop work, no official Nintendo kit, no budget, and all the art drawn on an Amiga with Deluxe Paint before being handed to a PC for coding.
The original SNES package gave American players a clothing‑color selector, while the European version added a speed toggle and even let friends share lives in co‑op mode. Graphics earned consistent praise for their detail, though critics complained the combat grew repetitive and the sound effects felt thin, resulting in a scatter of review scores that hovered around the 60–80 % range. After a brief showcase at CES, the title slipped under the radar until Piko Interactive resurrected it for a worldwide re‑release in 2017, and a PlayStation remake had already appeared back in 1998.
Storyline
In the SNES classic Legend, the tyrant Beldor the Maleficent ruled the kingdom of Sellech for a thousand years, spreading chaos and destruction. Countless knights launched a final crusade against him, but none ever returned. United by desperation, the people forged energized heroes and managed to imprison Beldor’s soul, bringing a fragile peace to the land. The peace is shattered when Clovis, the corrupt son of the king, schemes to harness the sealed soul’s power and conquer Sellech. Players assume the roles of the knight warriors Kaor and Igor, journey across the medieval realm, enlist the aid of townsfolk, and battle a host of enemies. Their quest culminates in the sanctuary where Clovis resides; after a fierce showdown they defeat him, Beldor’s soul vanishes, and the kingdom celebrates a hard‑won victory.
