Summary
Playing as either Dr. Angelo or Carla Parkette in The Lawnmower Man feels like stepping into a retro mashāup of Contra and Metal Slug. The sideāscrolling stages let you snag weapon upgrades and data discs, and once youāve hoarded enough discs they fuse into a Virtual Suit that shields you from that dreaded first hit.
The gameās biggest quirks are the four VRāthemed sections that break the platforming flow. Virtual World drops you into a firstāperson tunnel where you dodge trees and arches, while Cyber War adds occasional shooting stops. Cyber Run switches to a thirdāperson view with sporadic fireāpower, and Cyber Tube thrusts you down a fastāmoving tunnel swarming with enemies. All of these connectors are rendered in true 3D, borrowing directly from the movieās CG sequences.
Youāll recognize set pieces like Harleyās gasāpump and the sleek VSI headquarters, which serve as backdrops for the frantic runāandāgun action. The mix of platforming, shooter, and puzzle moments gives the title a varied feel, though the controls and graphics can feel uneven from one segment to the next.
Critics were split: GamePro praised the "aboveāaverage" runāandāshoot adventure, "hypnotic" firstāperson flying, and braināteasing puzzles, yet noted the inconsistent control quality. Others slammed the lack of a save feature and called the overall package tired, even landing the game on a worstāgames list. I find the ambition intriguing, but the uneven execution makes it a loveāhate experience for any retroāgaming fan.
Storyline
The Lawnmower Man follows Dr. Lawrence Angelo, a scientist at Virtual Space Industries working on ProjectāÆ5 ā a secret program that uses psychotropic drugs and virtualāreality training to boost primate intelligence. After a chimp escapes and shoots a guard, Angelo is forced onto leave, but he soon spots Jobe Smith, a simpleāminded oddājob worker who mows lawns, and decides to test the treatment on a human. The early sessions rapidly raise Jobeās IQ, yet an accident makes Angelo halt the experiments; the covert agency known as The Shop then reāinjects the volatile drugs, accelerating Jobeās evolution into a telekinetic threat who seeks revenge and aims to dominate global computers.
In the SNES continuation, Jobeās mind uploads into VSIās computer network, allowing him to corrupt and destroy information systems worldwide, ushering a looming dystopia. Dr. Angelo discovers that Jobe is being puppeteered by Zorn the Doomplayer, the head of The Shop, who intends to seize what remains of the world. Determined to stop the menace, Angelo embarks on a mission to dismantle The Shop once and for all.
