Summary

When the SNES version of Last Action Hero hit shelves on January 26, 1994, it arrived alongside the film’s home‑video debut and immediately stood out for its steep price tag—wholesale costs of $60‑$70 pushed retail to $100, forcing most copies into a seven‑month rental cycle before they ever reached a buyer. Developed by Bits Studios and published by Sony Imagesoft, the game translates the movie’s meta‑action into a side‑scrolling beat‑'em‑up that forces you to race against a strict timer on every level. While the film’s kid hero Danny Madigan never appears as a playable fighter—Columbia feared a child in a brawler wouldn’t sit well—the title still delivers two distinct car‑chase stages, one set in Jack Slater’s over‑the‑top movie world and the other in Danny’s gritty “real” world. True to the franchise’s gimmick, the final showdown pits you against Mr. Benedict, a boss fight that appears in every version except the NES, Game Boy and Game Gear releases, and the game never lets you wield guns or other weapons, keeping the combat pure and punch‑driven.

Storyline

Last Action Hero (SNES) follows the premise of the 1993 film, dropping player Danny Madigan into the movie screen while he watches a sneak preview of his hero Jack Slater.

Now standing beside Jack, you assume the role of the action‑movie star and battle the ax‑wielding Ripper, who has taken a school hostage, before confronting the film’s main antagonist, Mr. Benedict.

The game features two distinct car‑chase levels – one set in Jack Slater’s fictional movie world and a second that takes place in Danny’s real‑world environment – leading up to the final showdown where Benedict tries to use Danny’s ticket to unleash terror outside the screen.
