Summary

Kouryuu no Mimi, known in English as "Ear of the Golden Dragon," is a quirky single‑plane brawler that landed on the Super Famicom in the mid‑90s. It pulls its vibe straight from a short‑lived 1995 manga, using the comic’s characters and setting as a loose framework.

The game’s visual style leans heavily on bright, sprite‑heavy action, with enemies marching across a single scrolling plane that feels both nostalgic and oddly fresh. Despite its limited run, the title showcases a distinct blend of manga‑inspired humor and classic beat‑‘em‑up mechanics that set it apart from more mainstream SNES fighters.

Storyline

In Kouryuu no Mimi, Natsume Kiroemon is the 45th head of the Natsume clan and the new bearer of the legendary Koryuu no Mimi, a talisman said to grant its owner effortless wealth and women. After his father’s death he abandons the Italian monastery where he had been training, adopts the name Natsume Kiroemon and claims the artifact’s power. Returning to Japan, he falls hopelessly in love with Kanako, a member of the rival Mina family, which immediately makes him a target. The Mina clan repeatedly assaults him and eventually kidnaps Kanako, forcing Natsume to break the seal on the Koryuu, unleashing its full strength.

With the seal shattered, Natsume’s power surges and he launches a fierce retaliation against the Mina family. The player now guides his quest, deciding the ultimate fate of both the mystical Koryuu and the captured Kanako.
