Summary

King of Dragons is a fantasy‑themed side‑scrolling beat ’em up that lets you pick from five distinct heroes—a brawny Fighter, a shield‑wielding Cleric, a nimble Dwarf, a ranged Elf, and a spell‑focused Wizard. Each character feels unique: the Fighter trades magic for raw melee power, the Elf excels at distance attacks, while the Wizard balances weak defense with strong spells. As you hack through the game’s sixteen bite‑sized stages, every monster you slay and every gold nugget you collect adds to an experience pool that levels you up at set intervals, boosting health, attack range and even granting brief invulnerability. Weapon and armor pickups further spice the combat, and hidden yashichi icons reward extra continues.

The arcade’s simple two‑button layout—attack, jump, and a simultaneous press for a screen‑clearing magic blast—adds depth, especially when you learn to tilt the joystick back to block with a shield. The 1994 SNES port trims the roster to two simultaneous players, shrinks the sprites, and separates magic and shield to dedicated buttons, but the core upgrade loop remains intact. Though it never topped the charts—selling just under 12 000 copies in Japan—it earned a mixed critical patchwork, ranging from an 8/10 in Electronic Gaming Monthly to a low 30/100 in Hyper, cementing its status as a cult classic among retro beat‑em‑up fans.

Storyline

King of Dragons (often just called King of Dragons) puts you in the kingdom of Malus, where you guide a party of heroes across its lands to take down the monster hordes commanded by the fearsome dragon Gildiss. The quest drives you through varied environments as you battle the creature’s minions and work toward the final showdown.
