Summary
Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba, often just called Yaiba, is a Super Famicom title that brings Gosho Aoyama’s shōnen manga *Legend of the Swordmaster Yaiba* to life. Developed by Atelier Double and published by Banpresto, the game landed in Japan on March 25, 1994, and never saw an official Western release.
The game plays as an action‑RPG, blending side‑scroll combat with simple RPG mechanics. Reviewers at Weekly Famicom Tsūshin noted that while the concept is solid, the screen is constantly swarmed by enemies, giving it an average feel overall.
Storyline
Kenyuu Densetsu Yaiba follows the adventures of Ya‑bâ Kurogane, a young samurai raised in a forest with his father Kenjurou. One day a troop of gorillas attacks, forcing the pair to hide in a box of pineapples that ends up being shipped to the city. In the city Ya‑bâ learns he is a legendary warrior and soon clashes with the high‑school student rival Takeshi Onimaru; their duel ends in a stalemate, and a humiliated Onimaru discovers a magical katana that transforms him into a demon lord bent on world conquest. Ya‑bâ, aided by friends who train, encourage, or simply rescue him when his thick‑headedness creates trouble, sets out on a quest to stop Onimaru’s demonic army. Along the way they encounter figures from Japanese history and mythology, ultimately battling impossible odds to save the planet.
