Summary

Disney's The Jungle Book on the SNES feels like a love letter to classic side‑scrollers, letting you swing through the jungle as a spry Mowgli. You start with a simple banana projectile, but as you explore you can snag invincibility masks, coconuts, double‑banana shots and even boomerang bananas to keep the hostile critters at bay. Each stage is a timed sprint—six minutes to gather enough gems (or crystals, as the on‑screen compass calls them) and then track down a friendly character before the boss appears, who can only be hurt with your thrown weapons. The game rewards you with points for every gem you snatch, and the difficulty ramps up by demanding more of them: eight on easy, ten on medium, twelve on hard, out of fifteen scattered throughout.

The soundtrack leans heavily on the movie’s classics—"The Bare Necessities," "I Wan'na Be Like You," and "Colonel Hathi's March"—while original compositions by Mark Miller, Tommy Tallarico and Donald Griffin fill the gaps. Critics noted the lush graphics and fluid animation; GamePro called the vine‑swinging repetitive but praised the visual polish, and Electronic Gaming Monthly highlighted the tight controls and expansive levels. The SNES version even earned a spot at #53 on Total!’s Top 100 SNES list, and it later resurfaced in the Disney Classic Games Collection alongside Aladdin and The Lion King for modern consoles.

Storyline

The Jungle Book on the SNES puts players in the shoes of Mowgli, the boy raised by wolves in the jungle. He must leave his wild home and head for the human village, where his own kind await. Shere Khan, the tiger, is hunting him, forcing Mowgli to fight his way through jungle wildlife and ultimately confront the predator himself.

Along the journey Mowgli encounters familiar faces such as Bagheera, Baloo, King Louie and the hypnotic snake Kaa, each offering help or challenge. The ultimate goal is to reach the village and rejoin his kin.
