Summary

John Madden Football (often called Madden ’90) made a memorable leap onto the Super Nintendo in 1991, expanding the roster to twenty‑eight city‑based squads plus the bonus All‑Madden team. Each team was a generic stand‑in for its NFL counterpart, painted in the real‑world colors – even the added Oakland and New Jersey squads wore Raiders‑style silver and black and Jets‑style green and white. The game kept its signature top‑down, behind‑the‑quarterback perspective, letting players call audibles and contend with rain, snow or mud while saving progress via passwords.

Developed by Park Place Productions, a team of former Cinemaware staff, the SNES version shifted EA’s focus from pure realism toward a more arcade‑friendly, fun experience. This approach paid off: the title became a killer app for the console, earning a 95% rating from Computer and Video Games, a 92% from Sega Power, and the 1990 Golden Joystick Award for best 16‑bit console game. Its legacy was cemented when the Strong National Museum of Play inducted John Madden Football into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2018.
