Summary
Joe & Mac 3 – Lost in the Tropics feels like a quirky time‑traveling arcade tucked into a SNES cartridge. The game drops you into an overhead map that lets you pick from six distinct zones – a valley, jungle, snowy peaks, swamp, volcano and a final gauntlet – before each side‑scrolling stage kicks in. Along the way you can court a village sweetheart with flowers and meat, seal the marriage and even raise a child, while stone wheels serve as the quirky in‑game currency for replaying levels.
Boss battles are a prehistoric parade: Stegosaurus, Pteranodon, Triceratops, Elasmosaurus and a tyrannical Tyrannosaurus each guard a rainbow stone, and friendly dinos like a Pteranodon or Styracosaurus will give you a lift. The climax pits you against Gork, who mutates into a warthog demon before you claim the crown and end the adventure.
After its 1994 debut, the title resurfaced on a Retro‑Bit compilation in 2017, hit the Nintendo Switch Classics service in 2019, and landed on Evercade in 2020, with a modern collection slated for 2026. Critics were split – GamePro was upbeat, Total! called it bland, while Super Gamer gave it 75 % and Nintendo Game Zone praised its music with an 89 % score.
Storyline
In Joe & Mac 3 – Lost in the Tropics, the two caveman‑ninja heroes, Joe and Mac, travel through a valley, jungle, snowy mountain range, swamp and volcano to battle Neanderthals and a roster of dinosaur bosses. Along the way they can court a village girlfriend, offering flowers and meat as gifts; marriage lets them father a child. Stone wheels serve as currency, while rainbow stones are awarded for each boss defeat. Friendly creatures such as a Pteranodon, a Styracosaurus and a Plesiosaurus can be ridden to speed up travel. In the final stage the duo must re‑challenge every boss before facing Gork, who draws power from a crown and transforms into a warthog demon; defeating him a second time yields the crown and ends the game.
