Summary
International Superstar Soccer Deluxe – known in Japan as Jikkyou World Soccer 2: Fighting Eleven – builds on its predecessor with 36 national squads, each sporting fictional player names due to licensing limits. The roster can be arranged in 16 formations and 8 tactical strategies, giving plenty of room for tactical tinkering.
The game packs six distinct modes. Open Game lets you set stadium, weather, pitch size and even handicap a match, while Short League and Short Tournament offer 24‑team mini‑leagues and 64‑team knock‑outs. International Cup and European Cup start from regional qualifiers, World Series runs a full home‑and‑away league, Scenario drops you into historic moments, Penalty Kicks handles shoot‑outs, and Training provides free‑play, set‑piece drills and a challenge leaderboard. A password system saves progress despite the lack of a save feature.
Eight stadiums vary in surface, décor and dimensions, with specific yard/metre measurements for venues in the United States, Spain, Italy, England, Germany, Brazil, Nigeria and Japan, and the weather can be toggled to match the setting.
Critics were largely enthusiastic: Computer and Video Games gave it 91%, praising its speed and fun, GamePro awarded four out of five for its intuitive controls and lively commentary, while Next Generation called it slightly above average. GamesMaster even placed the SNES version eighth on its "SNES Top 10" list in 1996.
