Summary
Iron Commando is a side‑scrolling beat ’em up that landed on the Super Nintendo thanks to French studio Arcade Zone. The game lets you pick either Jake, a hard‑boiled soldier, or Chang Li, a martial‑arts master, and battle the mysterious G.H.O.S.T. thugs across ten gritty stages.
The action isn’t confined to streets—players can hop into a Jeep, race a mine cart, or roar on a motorcycle, a rarity for the genre at the time. A solid two‑player mode with stereo sound makes it a solid pick for fans of Final Fight and Streets of Rage.
Originally slated for a European launch, the title was scrapped when Sony dropped SNES third‑party publishing, leaving it orphaned until Pack‑In‑Video released the Japanese version ‘Iron Commando: Koutetsu no Senshi’ in early 1995. Piko Interactive rescued the title for modern audiences with a 2016 Steam release and a 2017 reproduction cartridge, while BlazePro followed suit for the Super Famicom.
Japanese magazine Famitsu gave the Super Famicom port a lukewarm 20 / 40, but the quirky vehicle stages and co‑op chaos keep it a curious collector’s find.
Storyline
Iron Commando drops you into a frantic mission where you choose between Jake, a battle‑hardened soldier, or Chang Li, a disciplined kung‑fu master. Both are members of the Iron Commando field team and must prevent the shadowy organization G.H.O.S.T. from seizing a radioactive meteorite that could devastate the planet.
The duo travels across ten distinct environments, from neon‑lit city streets to medieval‑style castles, battling a bizarre mix of foes. Enemies range from street punks and gun‑fighters to armored knights and other strange creatures that guard the meteorite’s fragments.
By punching, kicking, shooting, and using special moves, you aim to recover the meteorite and save the world.
