Summary
Iron Commando – Koutetsu no Senshi caught my eye not just for its gritty beat‑'em‑up action but for its oddly tangled publishing history. It was born in France at Arcade Zone, then slated for a European SNES launch by Sony Electronic Publishing in the mid‑'90s, only to be scrapped when Sony pulled out of third‑party publishing on the console. The game finally saw the light of day in Japan, where Pack‑In‑Video’s Poppo label released it on February 10, 1995 under the full title *Iron Commando: Koutetsu no Senshi*. Decades later, Piko Interactive rescued the title, dropping a Steam version in 2016 and a faithful reproduction cartridge in 2017, while BlazePro did the same for the Super Famicom that year. Even Famitsu weighed in, giving the SFC version a modest 20 out of 40.
Storyline
In Iron Commando – Koutetsu no Senshi (often just called Iron Commando), a rogue meteorite crashes to Earth, its radioactive core threatening global catastrophe. Scientists determine the meteorite must be destroyed before it triggers dangerous genetic mutations, but a terrorist group known as g.h.o.s.t. also covets its power. The game follows the field team of Jack, a hardened soldier, and Chang Li, a kung‑fu master, as they are tasked with retrieving the deadly object and stopping the terrorists. Their mission takes them across ten distinct environments, from urban streets to medieval‑styled realms, battling punks, gunfighters, knights, and a host of bizarre creatures. Each stage tests their combat skills and teamwork, driving the race to save the world.
