Summary
Illusion of Gaia (known as Illusion of Time in PAL regions) feels like a puzzle‑filled adventure wrapped in a simple action‑RPG shell. You swing a flute, a sword, or a pseudopod depending on whether you’re playing as Will, Freedan or the later‑joined Shadow, and each character’s unique abilities open new paths that the others can’t reach. The ability to shift forms adds a layer of strategy that keeps the exploration fresh, especially when ancient ruins demand a specific technique to progress.
Combat is straightforward but rewarding: enemies display their hit points as red spheres, and instead of grinding for experience you earn permanent stat‑boosting jewels after clearing a room. Healing herbs are scarce, so managing life points becomes a tense part of the experience, and Dark Spaces serve as the only safe spots to recover health and save the game.
The visual design, courtesy of manga artist Moto Hagio, gives the world a distinct, almost mythic aesthetic, while Yasuhiro Kawasaki’s score blends eerie melodies with heroic motifs. The game sits between Soul Blazer and Terranigma, completing an unofficial Quintet trilogy that explores the rise and fall of ancient civilizations through a surprisingly mature lens.
Storyline
Illusion of Gaia takes place on a fantasy‑tinged version of Earth during the 16th‑century Age of Exploration. Real‑world sites such as Incan ruins, the Nazca Lines, Angkor Wat, the Great Wall of China and the Egyptian pyramids serve as puzzle‑filled landmarks, all pointing toward the legendary Tower of Babel. A looming comet, later revealed as an ancient weapon from the last Blazer War, threatens to reshape the planet.
The story follows a boy named Will, the sole survivor of a disastrous expedition to the Tower of Babel with his famed explorer father. After stumbling into a "Dark Space," Will meets Gaia—a being with a human face and tentacled body—who tasks him with saving the world. Gaia becomes his guiding spirit, offering magical advice throughout his journey.
Will gains the power to transform into two warriors: Freedan, a dark knight, and Shadow, a solid energy form. Together with his friends, he hunts Mystic Statues scattered across the globe, solving riddles and battling relentless foes.
At the Tower of Babel, Will and his companion Kara reveal themselves as the Dark Knight and Light Knight. Their united form, Shadow, summons the firebird to defeat Dark Gaia, the comet’s manifestation. The victory erases their memories of the adventure, returning the world to normal.
The ending is ambiguous: friends are shown in a modern school, hinting that, despite forgotten memories, their bond endures in the real world.
