Summary

Honkaku Shogi: Fuuunji Ryuou is a quirky SNES title that brings the classic Japanese board game into a digital format, but with a twist that sets it apart from the usual chess‑like offerings. Developed by the Tokyo‑based Aisystem and released by Virgin Interactive back in 1994, the game landed only in Japan, making it a hidden gem for collectors. Its interface mimics a traditional shogi board while the underlying engine handles the moves with surprising depth for a console of its era. If you ever stumble upon a cartridge in a retro shop, you’ll find a surprisingly faithful rendition of the “authentic” shogi experience, wrapped in the colorful aesthetic of early‑90s SNES titles.
