Summary

Hit the Ice delivers a cartoon‑style spin on hockey that feels more like a brawl than a sport. Each side fields just three players – a forward, a defenseman and a goalie – and the rules are deliberately loose, encouraging slashes, trips, elbows and even groin kicks without the usual penalties. Fights break out constantly; losing a bout only makes your skater sluggish for a moment, and repeated defeats can knock him out with an injury.

The game’s signature mechanic is the chargeable "super shot" that can blast the goalie into the net, and when a team falls behind a "super drink" can turn every shot into a super shot for a short burst. A quirky roster of spoofed names like Iven Yakashev, Phil Bunger and "Gunner" Hall adds extra flavor.

Arcade cabinets were a cash cow in the U.S., averaging $192.25 per unit in late 1990, and the PC Engine version topped UK sales in October 1991. The title was later ported to the TurboGrafx‑16, Genesis, Game Boy and SNES, cementing its reputation as a wild, over‑the‑top hockey experience.
