Summary

Fatal Fury 2 arrived on the Super Nintendo via Takara, preserving the arcade’s 20‑megabyte punch with bright, fast animation. The optional Fatal Fury 2 Commander controller let you trigger each character’s power and super moves with one button, simplifying the game’s 30 distinct motions. The roster adds Kim Kaphwan, the first Korean taekwondo fighter, and Mai Shiranui, SNK’s iconic ninja‑beauty, both of whom became series staples.

The two‑plane system returns, and you can switch planes by pressing Light Punch and Light Kick together; a Power Attack shoves the opponent into the background for extra damage. Hazards like electrified wires or roaming bulls add tactics, while new tools such as the Evasion Counter, Strong‑Punch taunts, and a Desperation Move (usable at 25 % health) deepen combat. After every fourth match a bonus round appears, and a team elimination mode lets squads clash for chaotic fun.

Critics gave the SNES port scores around 8‑9/10 from Electronic Gaming Monthly and 3.5/5 from Nintendo Power. It topped Famitsu’s December 1993 chart and later appeared on Total!’s and IGN’s Top 100 SNES lists. The game resurfaced on Nintendo Classics in 2025, proving the Aratanaru Tatakai still packs a punch for retro fans.

Storyline

Garou Densetsu 2 – Aratanaru Tatakai, known internationally as Fatal Fury 2, picks up a year after the events of Fatal Fury: King of Fighters and the death of the crime lord Geese Howard. A mysterious nobleman steps in as the new sponsor of the King of Fighters tournament, expanding the competition to a global stage. Veterans from the original series and fresh faces alike travel the world to clash in the revamped contest. In the single‑player mode, the nobleman systematically defeats the fighters who appeared in the first Fatal Fury game, driven by a personal vendetta. His ultimate goal is to find and confront the man he believes was responsible for Geese’s downfall.
