Summary
Illusion of Gaia (known in Europe and Australia as Illusion of Time) first appeared on the Japanese Super Famicom, bringing Quintet’s signature blend of action and role‑playing to the SNES. Though it never wore a Western label, the game sits comfortably alongside Soul Blazer and Terranigma, forming an unofficial trilogy that still feels cohesive when you think about the shared themes of ancient myths and modern technology.
What really caught my eye was the way three players could each log their own progress by writing entries into Will’s travel diary, turning a solo adventure into a shared chronicle. The cartridge’s battery‑backed save meant those 60‑hour journeys across more than 22 distinct locations never vanished, letting you return to the world whenever you felt like picking up the story again.
Storyline
Gaia Gensouki thrusts players into a world where an ancient civilization is bathed in an ominous glow. A Chaos Comet arcs across the sky, threatening the planet and sparking fierce battles before a fragile peace settles over the lands. Yet danger never truly fades, as the comet’s orbit draws dreadful beasts from forgotten ruins.
In the Age of Exploration, a boy named Will is born and soon faces tragedy on an expedition to the Tower of Babel, which tears him away from his father. Returning to South Cape, Will discovers latent telekinetic powers that awaken his destiny.
Guided by Gaia, his spirit mentor, Will can transform using the abilities of two legendary warriors. With magical powers, loyal friends, and a host of puzzles to solve, he must battle relentless enemies, explore ancient ruins, and ultimately reunite his family.
