Summary
Flying Hero: Bugyuru no Daibouken (often just called Flying Hero) is a bright, cartoony vertical shooter that feels like a love‑letter to Fantasy Zone and TwinBee. You pilot Bugle, a tiny winged ball in tennis shoes, across the whimsical Fantasy Land while the screen scrolls automatically; three speed settings let you fine‑tune the pace.
The game leans heavily on the Super Famicom’s Mode 7 tricks, using scaling and rotation for bosses and sprinkling sprite‑twisting effects throughout the stages. Scattered icons hand you quirky weapons—snowballs, lightning bolts, and more—against a roster of oddball foes such as flying monkeys, pirate cows, and giant rhino beetles. End‑stage showdowns range from a rock‑made spinning man to a jack‑in‑the‑box clown and a crow‑pirate leader, capped by a fireball that erupts from water.
Only three continues are available, making the difficulty feel surprisingly steep despite the game’s child‑friendly look. Critics in Japan gave it mixed scores, praising its imagination and humor while noting bland backgrounds and average sound. The title never left Japan officially, but a fan‑made translation now lets English‑speaking players experience its quirky charm.
Storyline
Flying Hero – Bugyuru no Daibouken (often just called Flying Hero) opens in the Fantasy Land where the demon king and his witch conspire to abduct Bugyuru’s girlfriend, Pao. The kidnapping is carried out by a mysterious vampire named Biblio, who snatches her and disappears.
Determined, Bugyuru takes to the skies, soaring across a series of strange worlds. Along the way he battles bizarre foes such as flying monkeys and massive rhino beetles, all in a frantic chase to rescue Pao and thwart the demonic duo.
