Summary
Flashback feels like stepping into a moving comic book, thanks to its hand‑drawn backdrops and rotoscoped animation that give the protagonist Conrad a surprisingly fluid, almost cinematic gait. The platforming plays out across a series of static screens that stack vertically, forcing you to climb, swing on ledges, and drop down with realistic momentum—falling from too high a height is instantly fatal. Conrad’s arsenal is minimal but clever: a pistol with endless ammo, a rechargeable force shield that doubles as health, and a portable force field that can block enemy fire, while later levels hand you a teleportation device for those otherwise unreachable spots. The North American SNES manual even included a Marvel‑style comic to set the stage, whereas the PAL version swapped it for plain text, and Nintendo’s content rules nudged a few visual tweaks like turning a bar into a café and recoloring mutants green. Critics praised the SNES port for its upgraded graphics and music, and it still shows up on retro rankings—IGN placed it at 79th, Complex at 43rd, and Total! at 24th—highlighting how its blend of action, puzzles, and atmosphere still holds up.
Storyline
In the year 2142, intelligence agent Conrad B. Hart awakens on the jungle‑covered world of Titan with his memory wiped clean. While exploring, he discovers a recording of himself urging him to find his friend Ian in New Washington. Ian rescues Conrad and uses a regenerator device to restore his memories from a digital copy Conrad had sent earlier. The restored memories reveal that Conrad’s visor, designed to analyse molecular density, unintentionally exposed an alien race called Morphs that have infiltrated human society.
Conrad learns that the Morphs erased his knowledge and tried to eliminate him, so his only chance to leave Titan is to win a ticket in the gladiatorial deathmatch known as "Death Tower" (renamed "Cyber Tower" in the Super NES port) and to acquire forged papers by completing dangerous jobs around New Washington. With the ticket and papers in hand, he returns to Earth only to find Morph infiltrators already preparing an invasion, forcing him to breach their hidden base beneath a nightclub.
Inside the hideout, Conrad overhears the Morphs plotting to conquer Earth using stolen technology, but a vent collapse leads to his capture. He escapes, discovers a teleport to the Morphs’ home planet, and meets a human prisoner, Phillip Howard Clark, who hands him an atomic charge before being killed.
Guided by Phillip’s voice, Conrad learns the charge is meant to destroy the "Master Brain" that controls the Morphs from the planet’s core. He plants the charge on an unstable platform, triggers a tremor that drops it into the core, and escapes in a Morph spacecraft just before the planet explodes. Drifting in space, he places himself in suspended animation, setting the stage for the sequel Fade to Black.
