Summary
The Firemen lets you step into the boots of Pete Grey, a fire‑fighter armed with a versatile hose that can blast a focused stream, fan out a spray, or launch fire‑extinguishing bombs. Your partner, the invincible Daniel McClean, hangs back to cover you while you chase down the ever‑present "boss fire" that requires a specific tactic to douse. Along the way, rescuing trapped civilians not only adds a heroic touch but also patches up Pete’s life gauge, giving you a chance to keep the flames at bay.
Beyond Pete and Daniel, the game peppers the action with fellow crew members Max and Walter, who battle blazes in other parts of the building, and a voice‑over guide, Winona, who dishes out advice and mission updates. The architect Frank Weller provides the backdrop of the Metrotech complex, adding a subtle narrative layer without pulling you out of the firefighting focus.
Critics praised The Firemen for its fresh premise, tight controls, and crisp SNES graphics, earning a Silver Hall of Fame nod from Famitsu and scores that often hovered in the 80‑90% range. While the title’s length and single‑player only design drew some criticism, its blend of action and rescue made it a memorable, if brief, showcase of disaster‑themed gaming.
Storyline
The SNES title The Firemen (often just called Firemen) drops players into a chaotic Christmas party gone wrong at the chemical plant Metrotech (also listed as Microtech in some sources). Firefighters Pete and Daniel, along with another duo stationed elsewhere in the building, must rescue trapped civilians, douse the spreading flames, and locate the volatile chemical MDL hidden in the basement before it detonates.
