Summary

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (often just called Thracia 776) feels like a hidden gem from the Super Famicom era. It began as a modest side‑project to Genealogy of the Holy War in early 1998, but the team at Intelligent Systems let it grow into a full‑blown tactical RPG, adding a fatigue mechanic that forces you to juggle who can act each chapter. Shouzou Kaga wrote the scenario, Mayumi Hirota supplied the character art, and Yuka Tsujiyoko returned to compose a soundtrack that still holds up as some of the console’s best music.

The game first appeared on Nintendo’s Power flash cartridges in September 1999, then saw a standard ROM release in early 2000, making it the last home‑console Fire Emblem until 2005. Despite modest sales—around 100‑150 k units—it earned high scores (35/40 from Famitsu) and a reputation for brutal difficulty, a point repeatedly praised by retro reviewers. Its rarity and quality have kept it in the conversation, especially after fan translations like Project Exile finally opened the story to English speakers.

Later, Nintendo re‑released Thracia 776 on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console in Japan, cementing its status as a cult classic that showcases the series’ strategic depth and the passion of its creators before they moved on to new projects.

Storyline

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 is set on the Thracian peninsula in southeastern Jugdral, sandwiched between Chapters 5 and 6 of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. The game unfolds during the generational gap of the Genealogy storyline while the exiled prince Seliph remains hidden, preparing his own fight against the Grannvale Empire.

The story follows Leif, Seliph’s cousin and the deposed heir of the Republic of Munster. Rescued as a child by Finn, a friend of his late parents Quan and Ethlyn, Leif spends years on the run before finding refuge in the village of Fiana. When Raydrik, the new Duke of Munster, attacks the village and kidnaps Leif’s friends Nanna and Mareeta, Leif rallies a private army to strike back.

Leif’s rebels free both captives, defeat Raydrik’s forces and the high‑ranking priest Veld of the Loptous Sect, and retake Munster while liberating northern Thracia. In the final showdown Veld transforms the fallen Raydrik into the undead Deadlord Mus; Leif destroys Mus and kills Veld, securing Munster and northern Thracia against the Grannvale army.
