Summary
Final Fight arrived on the SNES as one of the system's launch titles, but the handheld had to make big compromises. The game strips away the two‑player co‑op, drops the Industrial Area stage and the selectable ninja Guy, meaning I can only swing around as Haggar or Cody. On the low‑powered console only two or three foes can share the screen at once, so Capcom padded the scrolling with extra stopping points and shuffled enemy placement to keep the action feeling dense. The English version also went through a heavy clean‑up: boss names became Thrasher and Katana, the wheelchair of Belger turned into an office chair, and characters like Poison and Roxy were swapped for male goons, while blood was replaced by cartoonish explosions. Toshio Kajino re‑imagined the arcade soundtrack for the SNES, and despite the cuts the cart moved 1.5 million units worldwide, making it one of Capcom’s biggest hits on the console.
Storyline
Final Fight takes place in Metro City, a fictional Atlantic‑coast metropolis that mirrors New York. In the late 1980s the crime wave was finally curbed after former wrestler Mike Haggar was elected mayor, but the Mad Gear Gang, run by the corrupt businessman Belger, refuses to bow out. Belger kidnaps Haggar’s daughter Jessica—who is also the girlfriend of the street‑wise fighter Cody Travers—to provoke the mayor.
Fueled by anger, Haggar teams up with Cody and Guy, a ninja‑in‑training and Cody’s rival‑friend, to smash the gang’s operations. The trio battles through the Slums, the Subway and other districts, confronting endless thugs and mid‑level bosses. Their quest ends with a showdown against Belger himself, rescuing Jessica and restoring order to Metro City.
