Summary
Final Fantasy III on the Super NES stunned me with its ambition—fourteen selectable heroes, the biggest roster the series had ever offered, and the need to juggle up to three separate four‑member parties as the plot unfolded. The game built its battles around the now‑iconic Active Time Battle system, where each character’s speed fed an ever‑ticking action bar, and every protagonist boasted a personal quirk, from Terra’s Trance to Locke’s steal and Sabin’s blitz. Magic was a slow‑burn reward: early‑only spellcasters could later teach spells to almost anyone via magicite‑crafted Esper crystals. Visually, the Mode 7‑powered overworld gave a faux‑3D sweep that felt cutting‑edge for 1994, while the pixel‑perfect sprite work from Kazuko Shibuya and character concepts by Yoshitaka Amano made each avatar memorable. Development wrapped in just one year with roughly thirty staff, split between director Yoshinori Kitase (scenario) and Hiroyuki Ito (battles), while Hironobu Sakaguchi produced and Nobuo Uematsu provided an unforgettable score. The North‑American launch, handled by Ted Woolsey, trimmed some mature imagery and renamed a few items, yet the title still topped SNES sales in the United States in October 1994.
Storyline
Final Fantasy III takes place in a world where the Gestahlian Empire has seized powerful espers and fused them into Magitek, granting its soldiers magical abilities. The rebel group known as the Returners opposes the empire and recruits an amnesiac half‑human, half‑esper soldier named Terra Branford after she awakens from a mind‑controlling crown. Terra joins a cast of fourteen permanent characters—including Locke, Celes, the Figaro brothers, Cyan, Setzer, Shadow and others—to fight Emperor Gestahl and his psychotic Magitek Knight Kefka. Their quest leads them to free the imprisoned espers in Vector, who turn into magicite and restore Terra’s memories, revealing her lineage as the daughter of the esper Maduin.
Empowered by the espers, the empire raises the Floating Continent, but Kefka murders Gestahl, twists the ancient statues of the Warring Triad, and shatters the planet, creating the World of Ruin. A year later the surviving heroes regroup—Celes awakens on a deserted island, Terra embraces her dual heritage, and the others scour the ruined continents. They infiltrate Kefka’s tower, destroy the Triad’s remnants and defeat the madman, ending his tyrannical reign. With the espers gone, magic fades, yet the world begins to heal as the party flies toward a hopeful future.
