Summary

Fatal Fury Special on the Super Nintendo takes the core of the Neo Geo arcade hit and reshapes it for a home console. The game runs noticeably faster than its predecessor, Fatal Fury 2, and introduces a true combo system that lets you string attacks together, even granting a brief invincibility window after each hit. The roster swells to fifteen fighters, adding the four former boss‑only characters—Billy Kane, Axel Hawk, Laurence Blood, and Wolfgang Krauser—as selectable, plus returning faces like Tung Fu Rue, Duck King, and Geese Howard, while the secret Art of Fighting hero Ryo Sakazaki appears as a hidden opponent and, in the SNES version, becomes playable. Critics praised the sharper‑than‑expected graphics but lamented the echo‑laden audio and the occasional difficulty pulling off special moves; some felt the near‑death “special” attacks were a cheap balance trick. Despite these quirks, the conversion is generally regarded as a solid, fast‑paced fighting experience that helped seed SNK’s later King of Fighters crossover universe.
