Summary
Fatal Fury 2 on the Super Nintendo takes SNK’s 100‑Mega Shock pedigree and squeezes it into a cartridge that still feels like a proper arcade experience. The two‑plane battle system returns, letting you dash between foreground and background with a simple Light‑Punch/Light‑Kick press, while hazards like electrified wires or roaming bulls add a surprise‑damage layer you can actually exploit. The graphics are crisper than most 16‑bit fighters, and the animation feels faster, giving each of the eight selectable opponents a distinct visual punch.
What really makes this port stand out is the roster. Kim Kaphwan debuts as the first Korean taekwondo fighter, and Mai Shiranui cements her status as SNK’s iconic female ninja. The SNES version even lets you unlock the four boss characters with secret codes, and Hori’s limited‑edition Fatal Fury 2 Commander controller maps every power and super‑power move to a single button – a nostalgic cheat for anyone who loved the arcade’s depth.
Critics were split: Electronic Gaming Monthly crowned it “Game of the Month,” while GamePro lamented the loss of some Neo Geo polish. Still, Total! placed it 82nd and IGN 63rd on their Top 100 SNES lists, and a 2025 Nintendo Classics re‑release proves the game’s appeal hasn’t faded.
