Summary

The Girl Who Stands Behind, known in Japan as *Famicom Tantei Club Part II – Ushiro ni Tatsu Shoujo*, first appeared on the Family Computer Disk System as a two‑disk adventure in the spring of 1989. Its later life found a home on the Super Famicom via Nintendo Power’s flash‑cartridge service in April 1998, where it received a visual and audio overhaul that made the mystery feel fresh for a new generation. By late 2000 the title had climbed to seventh place among the 163 games offered through Nintendo Power, a testament to its lingering appeal, and a fan‑made English translation surfaced in 2004, finally opening the story to non‑Japanese speakers.

The Super Famicom version added a handy memo system, letting players pull up character bios and clue summaries without flipping through paper notes—a small quality‑of‑life tweak that modernizes the classic point‑and‑click feel. New sprites and richer soundtracks also give the haunted school setting a more atmospheric punch, while the core mystery‑solving loop stays true to its roots.

Gameplay unfolds through a menu of commands that let you talk to suspects, examine objects, or review gathered facts, with each choice rendered as concise text. This menu‑driven interaction keeps the focus on deduction rather than reflexes, making the game a pure, text‑heavy detective experience that rewards careful reading and logical thinking.

Storyline

In *Famicom Tantei Club Part II – Ushiro ni Tatsu Shoujo* (often just called Ushiro ni Tatsu Shoujo), the story opens three years before the events of *The Missing Heir*. A 15‑year‑old boy flees his orphanage on an autumn night, hoping to locate his missing parents, and is pursued by two police officers. Private detective Shunsuke Utsugi, respected by the force, intercepts the chase, brings the boy to a coffeehouse and convinces him to become his assistant.

Months later, Utsugi and his new aide are summoned to investigate the murder of freshman Yoko Kojima at Ushimitsu High School. Yoko’s friends, Ayumi Tachibana and Hitomi Kawai, help the duo piece together clues that link her death to the older Genjiro Kaneda case, which is approaching its legal expiration. The investigation also uncovers Yoko’s obsession with a campus legend called "The Tale of the Girl Who Stands Behind," a ghost story about a blood‑soaked girl appearing behind students. Together they must separate rumor from reality to solve both murders.
