Summary
Eye of the Beholder landed on the Super NES as a faithful translation of Westwood Associates’ 1991 first‑person dungeon crawler. The game drops you into a maze of stone corridors rendered in pseudo‑3D, where you command an initial party of four adventurers via a point‑and‑click interface. As you explore, you can swell the roster to six by resurrecting skeletons from fallen foes or recruiting wandering NPCs—a mechanic that threads through the entire trilogy and even lets you import the same party between sequels. The SNES version showcases graphics crafted in Deluxe Paint and a soundtrack packed with more than 150 Adlib sound effects, giving the underground world a surprisingly rich feel for the era. Critics at Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a 6.2 out of 10, applauding the 3‑D visuals and character variety while warning newcomers about its steep learning curve. SSI moved over 129,000 units of the title, contributing to a series total that topped 350,000 copies worldwide by the mid‑90s.
Storyline
In Eye of the Beholder, the Lords of Waterdeep commission a band of heroes to probe a growing evil beneath the city. The party descends into the sewers, only to have the ceiling collapse behind them—a collapse caused by Xanathar, the titular beholder. Trapped, the adventurers are forced to go deeper, navigating a maze of Dwarf and Drow clans, monsters, traps and puzzles until they reach Xanathar’s lair for the final showdown. After defeating the beholder, the game displays a simple blue window announcing the victory and the heroes’ return to the surface as celebrated saviors; no graphics accompany this ending. The later Amiga release replaced the text‑only conclusion with a brief animated sequence.
