Summary
Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, known in Japan as Estpolis Denki, feels like a love letter to classic 2D RPGs while still carving its own niche on the SNES. The game’s world is peppered with harsh dungeons and random encounters that unfold from a first‑person battle view, forcing you to juggle swords, spells, and a surprisingly unforgiving targeting quirk: if the first attacker knocks out a foe, the second’s strike still aims at the empty spot and misses.
Exploration rewards you with new gear and restorative items from town vendors or hidden chests, and progress is saved via a priest’s blessing at any church, using the cartridge’s battery‑backed slots. The party roster is diverse: the heavy‑armored Hero balances swordplay with modest magic, Lufia dazzles with thunder and water spells, Aguro relies on brute strength, Jerin excels at ranged fire and ice attacks, while Selan, Guy, and the elf Artea round out the mix with their own magical and physical specialties.
When it launched, the title topped U.S. SNES sales in February 1994 and earned a 93% score from Electronic Games, which called it the year’s best RPG. Though later critics sometimes compare it unfavorably to peers like Secret of Mana, many retro fans still cherish its quirky combat and memorable cast.
Storyline
The world of Estpolis Denki is dominated by a massive floating island that houses the Fortress of Doom, the base of the four god‑like Sinistrals. Centuries ago Maxim, Selan, Artea and Guy shattered the fortress and sealed the Sinistrals, bringing ninety years of peace. The game begins nine years after that peace, when a new hero must rise.
The hero, a red‑haired descendant of Maxim, grew up in Alekia under the care of Roman, a friend of his late father. He and his childhood friend Lufia—later revealed as Erin, sister of the Sinistrals—are drawn into a war when the Sinistral Gades attacks the northern kingdom. Joined by Aguro, leader of Lorbenia’s army, and half‑elf Jerin, they also encounter the aging Artea, who hands his bow to Jerin, while the veteran Guy dies from the shock of the Sinistrals’ return.
Seeking the Dual Blade, Maxim’s original sword, the party learns it was forged by the Sinistrals and that it awakens Lufia’s true identity as Erin. After defeating Gades, Amon and Daos inside the rebuilt Fortress of Doom, they break the fused Sinistral entity and force Erin back to Lufia, who stays behind as the fortress collapses. Peace returns, and later Lufia reappears with no memory of her past, prompting the hero to help her forge a new life.
