Summary
Eien no Filerna landed on the Super Famicom in 1995, arriving just as the console was winding down in Japan. Tokuma Shoten both built and shipped the title, which had originally been slated to drop alongside the series’ OVA but was pushed back two years by development hiccups. The game sticks to the classic turn‑based RPG formula of its era, peppering the journey with random monster encounters that reward experience and level‑ups. Players can arm each character with up to three weapons, swapping between them on the fly, and unleash special techniques by spending ability points. Notably, the roster omits several light‑novel figures—Baraba, Razzle, and Tess never appear, and the usual split‑up moments between Filena and Lila are replaced by Lila’s constant presence as the sole permanent companion, while other allies rotate in and out. Upon release, Famitsu gave it a modest 23 out of 40.
Storyline
Eternal Filena follows the lone survivor of the royal line from the ocean kingdom of Filosena, a realm shattered by the Devis Empire. Raised as a boy by her adoptive grandfather Zenna, Filena is trained for the Empire’s gladiatorial games because girls are forced into prostitution while boys become combatants. At sixteen she is slated for her debut in the imperial coliseum, but before the match the Empire assigns each gladiator a concubine; Filena’s assigned bed‑mate, Lila, forces her way into Filena’s quarters and discovers the truth about Filena’s gender. As Filena fights her way up the gladiator ranks she learns the deadly contests are merely scripted spectacles controlled by hidden writers. Determined to end the tyranny, Filena and Lila embark on a quest to topple the Devis Empire, reclaim the lost kingdom, and reveal Filena’s true heritage as the kingdom’s missing princess.
