Summary

Earthworm Jim on the Super NES dazzles with its blend of run‑and‑gun action and quirky platforming tricks. Jim’s gun lets you blast foes while his worm‑body whip doubles as a grappling tool, letting you swing from hooks or yank the helpless Peter Puppy to safety in the famously chaotic "For Pete's Sake" stage.

Between the side‑scrolling levels the game throws in a surprise race called "Andy Asteroids," where you pilot Jim’s rocket from a behind‑the‑back view, dodging asteroids and out‑pacing Psy‑Crow. Other interludes include a bungee‑jump showdown, a frantic underwater maze, and a competitive fighting arena, keeping the pacing fresh and unpredictable.

The SNES port swaps in brighter backgrounds, new special effects, and a handful of sound tweaks, but it drops the "Intestinal Distress" level found on the Genesis. Despite that omission, the hand‑drawn animation remains fluid, and the boss gallery—featuring the likes of Hickboy, Queen Slug‑for‑a‑Butt, and the robotic chicken—still feels delightfully over‑the‑top.

Critics responded enthusiastically, with an 83 % aggregate on GameRankings, high marks from AllGame and Electronic Gaming Monthly, and praise from Famitsu. IGN placed Earthworm Jim at #57 on its Top 100 SNES Games list, and Complex counted it among the console’s best, citing its humor, inventive level design, and standout animation.

Storyline

Earthworm Jim begins with an ordinary worm named Jim who is suddenly equipped with a high‑tech "super suit" that falls from the sky. The suit becomes his body, letting him move and fight like a human while his worm remains his head. A crow called Psy‑Crow, hired by the flamboyant Queen Slug‑for‑a‑Butt, chases a renegade ship that stole the indestructible cyber‑suit, blasting the captain and sending the suit crashing to Earth.

When the suit lands on Jim, space particles trigger a rapid evolution, and Jim discovers he can control the powerful armor. He overhears the Queen’s plan to use the suit to become more beautiful than Princess What’s‑Her‑Name, prompting him to set out on a quest to meet the princess himself.

Jim eventually reaches Princess What’s‑Her‑Name, but the reunion ends abruptly when a cow—launched into space by Jim at the game’s start—crushes her, concluding his bizarre adventure.
