Summary

Dragon Ball Z: Super Butōden (simply called Dragon Ball Z in Europe) was the first true fighting game to bring the Saiyan saga onto the SNES. It uses a six‑button layout that lets you pull off classic Dragon Ball special attacks with simple combos, while the L and R buttons let you dash forward or back – a handy trick when you need to close the distance or retreat. The most eye‑catching gimmick is the split‑screen mechanic: if the two combatants drift apart, the view divides so both fighters stay visible, with a tiny radar keeping track of their positions.

The roster starts with ten characters – Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Frieza, Android 20, Android 18, Android 16, Cell, Trunks and Gohan – each with their standard forms, and a hidden transformation can be unlocked via a cheat code. A tournament mode lets you battle through eight opponents, while a two‑player versus mode pits friends against each other. Behind the scenes, producer Toshihiro Suzuki and co‑directors Akihumi Kubota and Shinsaku Shimada guided a team of pixel artists and programmers, while Kenji Yamamoto supplied the iconic soundtrack.

Storyline

Dragon Ball Z – Super Butouden (often just called Super Butouden) lets players relive Goku’s journey from his clash with Piccolo in the Tenkaichi Budokai to the climactic showdown of the Cell Games. The game follows the anime’s major arcs, culminating in the final battle against Perfect Cell.

In story mode you choose a fighter for each match, strategically picking who will face the next opponent as you progress through the tournament brackets. Each victory advances you toward the ultimate Cell Games round, where the selected hero must defeat Perfect Cell to complete the saga.
